Long-Term Plan

Quinn says there were several hard years, but “I believed in our system,” he explains. “I got the right people in place, and stuck with the long-term plan.”

That long-term plan included being the best it could be at manufacturing and selling pumps, which Quinn feels many U.S. competitors don’t make their highest priority.

“We did business a little differently,” Quinn says. “A lot of our competitors are small independents. They’re good people, but all they have is their own knowledge base.Quinn Pumps USA, reciprocating rod pumps, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada

“They get work because of the social side of things, or they do a lot of wining and dining,” he adds. “Or, some huge supply companies just sell multiple products, pumps being one of many they sell. I specialize in one [kind of product].

“It took people awhile to realize the value we could bring,” Quinn adds. He says that in addition to providing a quality product, the company’s ability to work directly with customers and adapt its products for different situations sets it apart.

This is made possible by long-term employees who know the business, he explains. “We do a lot of internal training,” Quinn says. “I believe strongly in promoting from within.

“I think you get a lot of companies, where they’re trying to go hire someone, and trying to steal some of your top people. I just believe that you should develop a long-term loyalty.

“I try to bring [employees] in at lower levels and promote them and train them. If I look at the managers in my store, 75 percent of them were promoted from within the system.” Quinn says this creates loyal employees and a consistent way of doing business throughout different locations.
