Page 3 of 3 MT: You've referred to the state's auto industry as its signature industry, yet there's an emphasis on the “new” Michigan economy. What does the auto industry look like in the new Michigan economy? How does the Tomcar assembly contribute to it? JG: There is no picture of Michigan's future that doesn't include the automobile. Michigan put the world on wheels 100 years ago and continues to serve as the global epicenter of automotive research and development. With more than 330 automotive R&D, engineering and tech centers, and expenditures topping $12.4 billion annually - more than the other 49 states and North America combined – we are taking our signature industry into the high-tech 21st century. The more we are able to attract advanced automotive manufacturing industries and high-tech firms like Tomcar, the more we further Michigan's image as a 21st century and global competitor.
MT: On what levels are investments like the one made by EDAG important to the Michigan economy? James Epolito: Investments like this reinforce that Michigan is ready for the 21st century state and help attract other high-tech companies – accelerating the diversification of our economy. MT: What are some of the concerns that overseas manufacturers and engineers express about investing in Michigan or setting up operations in the United States? JE: Many companies have chosen Michigan over competing states because of our skilled work force and strong work ethic. MT: What makes Michigan an attractive location for global companies? JE: Michigan offers an attractive business climate, world-class universities, a highly trained work force and quality of life not easily found anywhere else in the world. MT: How are companies like EDAG setting an example for other auto-related companies who are considering locating in Michigan? JE: The EDAG-Tomcar production agreement underscores again the importance of the governor's “go anywhere, do anything” pursuit of good-paying jobs for Michigan. Our state is the ideal place for companies to find success in manufacturing in the 21st century with our highly skilled work force and friendly business climate.
