Within two years of its inception in 1988, Austin Semiconductor Inc. (ASI) received certified supplier status for the U.S. Space Shuttle program from NASA; soon after, NASA gave the company certified supplier status for the U.S. Space Station Freedom program. ASI says it found success so early in its history and garnered these certifications – as well as ISO 9001, AS 9100 and all certifications on the Qualified Manufacturer’s List – because the foundation of its corporate philosophy is attention to detail in quality, manufacturing and engineering. On this foundation, Austin Semiconductor says it strives to be the “premier quality service partner” to companies in a broad range of industries. The company explains it is a leading supplier of high-reliability (HI-REL) and plastic encapsulated semiconductor products because of its expertise and capabilities in all post-fabrication processes, as well as its lean, streamlined manufacturing operations, which ensure low pricing and competitive lead times. “Austin Semiconductor has a long-standing history of supporting the HI-REL community through its extensive product and service portfolio,” Director of Manufacturing Danny Weibel said in a statement. “We believe that, in addition to providing quality products, our broad range of manufacturing capabilities allows us to provide superior service to this community. We continue to see synergistic opportunities between our products and the services we offer.” Based in Austin, Texas, the company says its turnkey and build-to-print capabilities allow it to serve the military, aerospace, transportation, industrial-embedded and medical diagnostic markets with HI-REL ceramic components, multi-chip modules, integrated plastic encapsulated microcircuits, commercial-off-the-shelf up-screened products and the solid state disk on chip. “Austin Semiconductor is progressively changing the landscape availability for integrated components, sub-systems and systems in package for use in HI-REL and harsh environments,” the company says. “ASI prides itself on building and maintaining long-term business relationships, as well as providing a full-service solution to our customers’ specific product and manufacturing needs.” ASI says it is distinguished in the marketplace because of its substantial experience in available silicon technologies; experience in all facets of packaging and packaging technologies; and availability of turnkey design, test and management services. Additionally, it has structured its assembly operations to meet the unique needs of the HI-REL markets, and to provide small-lot manufacturing as well as large-lot and continuous production. ASI notes its assembly line exceeds the requirements for space-level manufacturing. “Our resources are available to address needs regardless of the magnitude of the request,” it says. “We have an extensive range of capabilities, which allows ASI to be the premier worldwide supplier of state-of-the-art semiconductor products for HI-REL applications. Our technical expertise allows us to design new parts and processes very quickly.” ASI says its current lead-free offerings include products with a 99.9 percent pure gold terminal finish. As dictated by market demand, the company says, it will offer a lead-free, flash-coated terminal finish consisting of a 400 micro-inch nickel base with a 4-8 micro-inch palladium gold finish. “Austin Semiconductor will continue to service existing designs that require lead finish with our standard 63/37 percent tin/lead solder finish and will provide this offering as long as there is an industry requirement,” the company says. “In addition to lead-free initiatives, restrictions also include hexavalent chrome, mercury, cadmium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. These hazardous substances are not part of the Austin Semiconductor manufacturing process.” |
