This year, the 200 employees who work for Akron Foundry Co. have more to celebrate than just its 60th anniversary. Founded in 1950 by George Ostich, the Akron, Ohio-based company has evolved from a small, family run foundry into a comprehensive manufacturer of sand casting, permanent mold casting and low-pressure permanent mold casting, with the capability to produce 2,000-pound sand castings and 300-pound low-pressure permanent molds.

The cost of shipping a 50-foot-tall tank filled with sand around the world can add up, so Parkson Corp., a supplier of process engineering components and systems for water and wastewater treatment, works with manufacturing companies worldwide to produce that tank as close to its final destination as possible.

Few companies are thought of as true innovators in their respective industries, and even for those, their innovations are often decades apart. On the other hand, however, Zotos International has consistently developed new ideas in the creation of hair care products for salons and salon professionals.

With a unique online business model, Atlanta-based Quickparts opens the door for engineers to order low volume, custom designed parts with a click of a button. Quickparts handles order quantities from one part to 100,000 – filling a unique niche left void by manufacturers that only take orders exceeding 100,000.

Working with metal is one of mankind’s earliest technological achievements, but that doesn’t mean we know everything there is to know about it. Take, for example, the case of Ohio and Pennsylvania-based Elyria/ Hodge Foundries Co., a company with more than 100 years of experience in the industry that recently undertook a massive change in the way it operates based on the concepts of lean manufacturing.

Juanita’s Foods was founded in 1946 and began its legacy by making menudo, a popular Mexican stew, it says. The company today is the world’s largest manufacturer of prepared canned menudo, and it also makes chicken and pork pozole, meatball soup, Mexican-style hominy, hot and mild sauces, traditional beef and vegetable and chicken and vegetable soups, beef chile Colorado and pork chile verde stews.
